The rare disease of PH-Pulmonary Hypertension-is where the blood from the heart has a difficult time pumping the blood into the lungs due to constricted blood vessels in the lungs. Perhaps, I ended up with this due to the unknown vasculitis that hit my lungs, weakening them.
I've learned so much about rare diseases that are not so rare as I notice more and more people signing on to medical sites looking for a treatment or a cure. It is amazing. I never really thought about all these illnesses that redefine our lives in so many ways. But, since I've been living it, I can sympathize and empathize with those who are ill. My one wish would be that all the people who are ill be granted a cure.
With these medical conditions that I have, I am limited as to where I can go because of germs. It is very easy for me to catch a cold, infections, etc. because my immune system has been diminished because of the medicines I must take. Because of this, I have missed a significant amount of family happenings, get togethers, outings, travelling, etc.
One that I just missed recently was the culmination of my nephew's studies in the Sciences. He just received his PH D. He has worked tremendously hard, putting himself through college and doing research. The research that he has done is too complex for me to understand. I just nod when he is explaining about atoms, etc. as if I get it. He humors me. He wanted to graduate by his 28th birthday and he did. Yeah. I am so proud of him.
He stopped by to share his good news and brought me some baguettes. Yum... I know, I am all about food these days. Oh, that prednisone!! He has travelled to France with me and gone there on his own, going back to places where I had taken him and that he loved. I think my traveling bug has rubbed off on him as he is hoping to do post doctoral work in Japan.
He has travelled all over the US for BU giving workshops on their findings to other scientists and been published in his field several times. Right now, he is traveling in Europe and enjoying a respite. As soon as I am able, we plan on heading back to France. I can't wait. He was around 15 when we last went together. We are about due for another trip. He is the PH Der of the family and I am the PHer of the family. Congratulations, Dr. Mott. I asked him if I had to call him doctor now or what? "Oh,"he said,"you can call me whatever you want." He hasn't changed one bit. What a sweetie. He is the only doctor that I have encountered lately that is not a medical doctor. So, I think I'll just stick with his first name.
May all your wishes come true. May the traveling bug take you to new places to explore and enjoy.
