Received an inquiring phone call from Fred, my adopted father-in-law, who was calling to check on my pie eating habits after reading my blog. I had to stop eating one of my favorite pies-apple to take his phone call. Just kidding! I have to confess, all pies are my favorite.
As mom always says, Crisco is the best. We have her lined up to do a commercial. She doesn't use any other shortening, but Crisco. This has been confirmed when Crisco was on sale and sold out with the promise of a rain check. How did one come up with a rain check? Does that make sense? I digress. Well, mom explained to the clerk handling "rain checks" that pies did not have that crusty, flaky consistency without Crisco. After mom had given her commercial speech explaining that she had made pies for years without any mishaps with Crisco, the clerk couldn't help but hand over the rain check. (We won't tell about my first pie making adventure. We thought the dentist might have to become involved. )
Fred asked me what he could do to help me. I said, "Fred, you have helped me so much already with the insurance dilemmas and you are helping me now, just your phone call is plenty." Truthfully, it is better than any shot or pill I've taken. It truly is the best medicine in the whole world-an uplifting, caring phone call. It does more wonder for a person's body and mind than any medicine. Medicine can't fix the spirit, but a phone call sure can.
Oh, yes, Fred and I explored the category of foods-I know what you are thinking-does she ever stop thinking, obsessing perhaps about food? Well, Fred did mention that Moe's in Vestal has fine food. I haven't been there, yet, but I intend to after my transplant. He has a free pass to the kitchen, where he can easily have what he enjoys. I think it helps that a family member is a part owner, if I remember correctly. I was too busy focusing on his detailed description of their enormous burritos that are piled high with delectable choices of cheese, lettuce, beans and a whole lot more to choose from. I must say," Bon appetit!" Oh, that French just adds a little spice to their fine cuisine. Thank you, Fred, for the info. My prednisone and I are looking forward to the burrito bonanza.
May you make a phone call to a family member or friend to lift their spirits. It only takes a few minutes to make their heart smile on the inside.
